Key Features

1015 Mariposa was the beloved home of this family for over sixty years, enjoyed by multiple generations. This home has outstanding karma! Beautiful period details blend with extensive updates in this gracious Colonial. The main level features an unusually spacious living room and dining room, and a classic spindled staircase. Over the years the family invested in thoughtful upgrades, including all dual-pane windows, an energy upgrade, seismic retrofitting and two architect-designed enhancements. The home was expanded in the mid-1990’s to add a flexible suite, which can be used either as a family room, or an exceptional, and accessible master bedroom suite with ADA compliant bathroom. It opens to the patio and expansive, park-like fenced garden, which offers mature trees and wonderful privacy. More recently a period-appropriate bathroom remodel was completed upstairs, where you’ll also find three bright bedrooms with handsome vistas, one with peek-of-the-bay views. The back-facing bedroom has charming original built-ins. This home has enjoyed a recent kitchen remodel with new oak floors, counters and all new appliances, as well as interior painting, refinished floors, and new lighting throughout.

Mariposa is one of the most coveted single blocks in North Berkeley, a broad, tree-lined enclave of single-family homes known as a destination on Halloween! Equidistant to the myriad amenities on Solano Avenue, Monterey/Hopkins, as well as Gourmet Ghetto, this location is hard to beat!

History

N. Berkeley MAP

Not only is this block extremely special, but the overal location is extraordinary! Officially located in Northbrae Terrace, this home is within easy access of all the shops, restaurants, bookstores and other pleasures (such as great coffee!) in several North Berkeley destination areas. We could barely fit all of the great businesses near this home on our map! And apologies to those that didn't fit. But you get the idea: this is an ideal location for those who want to be near all of the action, but come home to the ultimate quiet, tree-lined street.

Within just a few blocks from this home you’ll find some of Berkeley’s most iconic destinations: Chez Panisse, Cheese Board and the original Peet’s Coffee. Head to Solano Avenue for an amazing array of specialty restaurants, bakeries and places to enjoy great coffee, wine and food of all descriptions. Some of my favorites include Ajanta for especially good Indian food, or enjoy brunch at Venus, or choose among the numerous Asian options further down the Avenue including Kirin, Sweet Basil Thai and Akemi Japanese. Rivoli has a loyal fan base for California cuisine, complete with views of wildlife in their garden. There are three groceries stores very near this home, as well as pharmacies, banks, bookstores and boutiques.

The second Sunday of September brings the Solano Avenue Stroll, a mile-long street fair with community organizations, food and other vendors, multiple stages and one of the best local events of its kind.

At Hopkins and Monterey is Monterey Market, well-loved for fresh produce of all descriptions, as well as a good selection of interesting wines. Monterey Fish, Magnani’s deli, the Cheese and Coffee Market, Hopkins Street Bakery and Gioa Pizza make this stretch my usual destination for European-style specialty store shopping with a true neighborhood feel. And then there's the pleasure of just wandering through Berkeley Hort for some serious plant lust!

On Thursday evenings head to Shattuck near Vine for a small but pleasant Farmer’s Market. Besides organic produce you’ll usually find a selection of meat and fish, breads, and several vendors offering prepared food to enjoy on the spot. Or stop in at one of several local restaurants for sushi or pizza, or indulge yourself at Masse’s for some of the most gorgeous cakes and pastries anywhere.

Neighborhood

North Berkeley at its Best!

Located officially in Northbrae Terrace on the border of Thousand Oaks, this home’s location combines access to the best of North Berkeley neighborhoods, equidistant to Solano Avenue, the Monterey Market area and Gourmet Ghetto, with downtown Berkeley not far away. The choices of shops and restaurants are hard to beat. Check out the MAP section for details, and some of my personal favorites.

Access to San Francisco and beyond is made easy with transbay buses as well as two BART stations closeby. Head up Marin and you can quickly be in Tilden Park for a hike, a picnic, some birding, a round of golf or just the chance to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Of course the University of California campus is a remarkable local resource. Not only is it a first-rate institution of learning, but it's also a a beautiful destination for a stroll, to appreciate a fine selection of local architecture, or to take advantage of myriad cultural events. There are free Wednesday noon concerts at Hertz Hall, as well as impressive concerts there year round. The Cal Performance series brings world-class entertainment of all forms to our backyard.

The Berkeley Arts District provides options for live theater and music of all descriptions from Berkeley Rep. as well as the Freight and Salvage right across the street. And now with one of the coolest parking garages anywhere, access is even easier than before. BAMPFA offers not only contemporary art, but also a fascinating selection of art films. We are so very fortunate to have so many amazing entertainment options right here in Berkeley!

Homes in the neighborhood are built in a variety of revival styles and feature manicured lawns and lushly landscaped gardens. This block was one of the first to acquire undergrounded utilities years ago, so the beautiful canopy of tall sycamore trees is unobstructed.

Mariposa is one of Berkeley’s notorious Halloween streets, visited by over 1000 children and many parents, most of whom dress up to make this a street faire for one evening each year! Some homes transform to haunted houses, others put out elaborate decorations. The tradition supposedly arose from a Berkeley school teacher who lived on the block and gave out full-sized Hershey’s chocolate bars one year, and the word got out! From then, Mariposa has been the North Berkeley destination each October 31st!
